Stumbling On Stones Of The Murdered
I first encountered Artist Gunter Demnig’s Stolperstein (Stumbling Block) project in Rome. Now it is a wave throughout certain centers of the Holocaust in Europe. In Slovenian the stones are called Spotikavci and they were unveiled in Ljubljana, Slovena on August 6, 2018. This event was organized by the Jewish Cultural Centre in Ljubljana. Mirko Ilic designed the poster for the current crop (below). It is written in the Talmud: “A person is only forgotten when his name is forgotten”. These stones keep the memory.

Demnig replaces the cobblestones outside Holocaust victims’ homes with brass plates inscribed with short epitaphs to commemorate individuals at exactly the last place of residency—or, sometimes, work— of persons who fell victim to Nazi terror, euthanasia, eugenics, was deported to a concentration or extermination camp, or escaped persecution by emigration or suicide.
