The Chilling Effects of the Cold War

If you were a child living in the United States during the mid- to late 1950s, mass media made it difficult, if not impossible, to avoid the paralyzing insecurity brought on by the Cold War. All of the players on the opposite side were devils and some of our home grown demigods (Senator McCarthy) were not much better.

The incessant propaganda barrages were relentless and agonizing. These disturbingly beautiful Time magazine covers, many brilliantly conceived by Boris Artzybasheff, were just the tip of the iceberg of freezing fear. They usually tried to show a human face, but often against a threatening backdrop.
