The Peaceful Uses of Montage
In the hands of John Heartfield, Germany’s most acerbic graphic political commentator, photomontage was a weapon against Nazi tyranny. It was, however, likewise used to promote tyrannies and idealize power in various countries during the 1920s and ’30s. In the Fascist capital of Rome in 1938, montage and collage were tools of another kind of propaganda—tourist allure. These are examples from the bilingual Italy magazine designed with a certain level of flair to stimulate travel to Italy during the last years of Fascist rule.
