Today's Obsession: Sleep

Here’s an interesting piece in the Harvard Business Review summarizing the importance of a good night’s sleep. Lately, I’ve been looking into healthy work/life practices. One of the toughest things for many designers is getting enough rest, given our culture of hyperwork. This article shows you the exact reasons you should ignore anyone trying to guilt you into staying at the computer past quitting time.
There’s a sort of romantic fiction of the designer as the lone experimenter, working late into the night and coming up with a eureka moment after endless nights of toil. It’s just a myth. One in every 40 people can actually work on less than seven hours a night of sleep—not that it stops the myths from happening. The more you sleep, the higher the quality of your work, and the sharper your faculties.
