After too many years, but just in the nick of time, Tomi Ungerer returns to New York for an exhibition at the Drawing Center—”Tomi Ungerer: All In One”—surprisingly his first retrospective in the United States. Curated by Claire Gillman, the exhibit leads off with his childhood drawings depicting the Nazi invasion of Strasbourg, through his work in New York and Canada, and concluding with his most recent political and satirical campaigns. Also on view as are his illustrations for the 2013 children’s book Fog Island.
As the Drawing Center states, “‘Tomi Ungerer: All in One’ will reintroduce this wildly creative individual to New York City and the world. The exhibition will occupy the entire Drawing Center, with a spotlight “exhibition” of Ungerer’s erotic drawings in the Drawing Room and animations in the lower-level Lab gallery.”
Come on Thursday, Jan. 15 from 6-8 p.m. for the opening reception. There will be public programs as well, including my own conversation with Ungerer on Saturday, Jan. 17 from 3-4:30 p.m.; book signing from 4:30-5 p.m.
