Weekend Heller: Great Illustrations, Fabulous Typefaces, Happy 2014

American Illustration for Sale Following the success of Swann’s first sale of original illustration art, this auction (January 23) features works by Ludwig Bemelmans (below top), Constantin Alajalov (below bottom), Theodor Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss), Rube Goldberg, Edward Gorey, Al Hirschfeld, Rockwell Kent, Charles Schulz and more.

See all the lots (and there are a lot) here.

Madeline and the Gypsies was originally issued as a Christmas booklet that came with the December 1958 issue of McCall’s. This drawing preceeds those published in the book by Viking, 1959.

“Standing Room Only.” Tempera on illustration board. 345×235 mm; 13 1/2×9 1/2 inches, image. Signed lower right with a Presentation inscription “To Elinor and Martin Bush.” Wonderful depiction of vexed dinner patrons glaring at blithely unaware or uncaring couple lingering well past dessert. Printers marks in the margins on recto; penciled date and exhibition label filled out in the artist’s hand on verso. Published as The New Yorker cover, October 21, 1944.

An Alphabetic New Year 2014 is here, but it is never too late to have the 2014 Letterform Archive calendar. Printed in five colors with stochastic screening, this “Artists of Letterform 2014 Wall Calendar is a treat for sore eyes as the days pass by our forlorn lives. The calender presents 232 birthdays of letter designers and typographers, like W.A. Dwiggins and A.M. Cassandre, as well as 12 typefaces “carefully chosen to complement each month’s masterwork of design.”

It’s a beautiful and inspiring production. Down comes my Cute Hairless Cat Calendar 2014 and up goes the “Artists of Letterform.” Get your taste here.
