Wood Type on Pulp

Matrix 7, edited by Maurice Kessman, designed by R. Roger Remington and art directed by Hans Barschel and Remington, was published to herald the research in wood type being conducted by the legendary Rob Roy Kelly in the mid 1960s. It was printed offset on newsprint to promote “renewed interest in Victorian typography,” which had “some surprising results among designers, amateur printers, historians, antique collectors and man others.” The newsprint has held up well over the years and today serves as a testament to the enduring allure of wood type manufacturing that was perfected with Darius Wells’ 1827 invention of the lateral router.
