Gael Towey has kept storytelling and innovation at the center of her career. Among her numerous achievements, she launched the Martha Stewart Living magazine and propelled the brand into new directions through her leadership, even taking on the role of chief creative officer of MSLO in 2005. When she left the company in 2012, Towey applied her love of storytelling and design to a personal project: “Portraits in Creativity“.
“Portraits in Creativity” are short films Towey directs and produces that highlight artists and their creative process, bringing their stories to life to inspire other designers. Towey’s latest film features illustrator Maira Kalman. This is a beautifully shot film that gives you a glimpse into what inspires Kalman and her process — and a taste of her personality.

For instance, Kalman, explaining why she likes New York City says, “I believe every person you talk to is eccentric. Deeply eccentric in their own way.” You can watch her video below (owned by Gael Towey & Co), or watch it here.
Season 1 of “Portraits in Creativity” also includes films featuring Gabriella Kiss and her jewelry, Alabama Chanin and her craft, and Sheila Berger and her painting and sculpting. Towey was recently recognized for her achievements with a 2014 AIGA Medal.
