Mary: A Magazine Made by Women

Jillian Goodman, founder and editor-in-chief of Mary Review, says in her premiere editor’s note that the title Mary, a magazine of news and ideas written and produced entirely by women, was inspired by Virginia Woolf’s book-length essay “A Room of One’s Own.” She then asks the rhetorical question “why does it have to be made by women?”

While there is nothing wrong with the question, we are continually shown that despite revolutionary change in some social, cultural and political sectors, “… all things are not equal,” writes Goodman. “Women writers are vastly underrepresented in outlets that purport to speak for the general interest. Their voices are muffled, drowned out, or sequestered where no one else has to hear them. This is, to put it bluntly, stupid. That’s why this magazine exists.”

From the story “Through the Looking Glass: In the bizarro world of Miss America, losers smile and winners sob.”

The first print issue was funded through Kickstarter. Hopefully a second will soon follow. The first, published in September and handsomely designed by Donica Ida, features an investigation into sexual assault in the trucking industry, an intellectual meditation on a week spent at Miss America, a conversation with novelist Angela Flournoy, and a feature on Kurdistan’s most patriotic pop star, among many other pieces. Mary‘s coverage includes essay, fiction and feature writing, and spans politics and popular culture, public and private conflicts, in the U.S. and abroad.

“Our editorial mission is to tell ambitious stories at a human scale; as a publication, our mission is to bring parity to the journalistic conversation,” says Goodman.
