Celebrating Bruce Lee and “Be Water” in 10 Posters
“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless—like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
Such is the saying by Bruce Lee that inspired the title of ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary Be Water, about the legendary martial artist and actor.
The film debuted over the summer, and to mark the occasion of what would have been Lee’s 80th birthday in late November, the Ho Chi Minh City–based branding and design studio Rice Creative created a series of 10 posters celebrating Lee and the film.
“The spectrum of solutions, each by a different designer, aims to portray the film in a singular, and sublime, way,” Rice writes.
Over the course of 10 weeks, the team at Rice met to delve into the many aspects and layers present in Bao Nguyen’s film. Featuring work by Hélio Teles, Elke Scholiers, Gregory Jewett, Lim Nuel, Sy Ly and Daniel Keeffe, the results are indeed a grand reflection fitting of the man who inspired so many through his legacy.
