When Vice President Joseph Biden said,“When people harm Americans, we don’t retreat. We don’t forget. We take care of those who are grieving, and when that’s finished, they should know, we will follow them to the gates of hell until they are brought to justice. Because hell is where they will reside. Hell is where they will reside,” he raised a few eyebrows with his punishing rhetoric and literary references.

Dante’s Gates, as described below, have tickled image-makers and wordsmiths for ages. I asked some of them to interpret the phrase in their devilish ways.

Through me you go to the grief wracked city; Through me you go to everlasting pain; Through me you go a pass among lost souls. Justice inspired my exalted Creator: I am a creature of the Holiest Power, of Wisdom in the Highest and of Primal Love. Nothing till I was made was made, only eternal beings. And I endure eternally. Abandon all hope — Ye Who Enter Here.
