When it comes to the world of packaging, no one covers it more comprehensively than Dieline—so we’ve partnered with our friends at the site on a new column, 5 Package Designs of the Week.

Check in every Friday for five of the finest pieces of pack from the week that was.

Volta Pasta

Lady and the Tramp isn’t the only iconic love story with a meet-cute over a plate of pasta. The design for Volta features a rich, vivid blue and a charming line drawing of two people enjoying a glass of wine over dinner. The typography-focused design utilizes the wavy ridges of pasta to convey personality and a deep personal connection to the product.”

Small Giants

“For the inner-disaster prepper and environmentalist in us all who understands that climate change is a genuinely real thing, despite what some anti-science politicos will tell you, then you’re probably well-aware that meat production is unsustainable and contributes to harmful greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. Not only that, but to feed the 10 billion or so people we’ll have on Earth in 2050, we’re going to have to increase food production by 70% across the globe. And that means utilizing alternative protein sources like the humble cricket. Of course, that might be too far a bridge to cross for some folks, even though many South American and African cultures have incorporated the tiny insect in their cuisine since time immemorial.

“London-based creative studio Midday led Small Giants’ branding process, while illustrator Fernando Molina helped design the visual identity. What you get is a playful, vivid piece of packaging that makes the cricket the star of the show. Plenty of cricket brands leave the insect by the side of the road when it comes to their packaging. But this mildly psychedelic illustration with serious Yellow Submarine vibes puts them front and center, albeit in oversized clothing.”

Maharani Gin

“Irish creative studio Slater Design produced a stunning gin label for Rebel City Distillery that pays homage to the power of Keralan women. The brand communicates a sense of beauty and strength, using a blue foil that stands in stark contrast to the white, while also utilizing deft linework and a gorgeously illustrated sword against the sea. Even the patterns of the label and the box seem to indicate just how smooth this premium spirit will go down.”

Sebestyén Winery

“Sebestyén Winery has a brand design that isn’t afraid to get funky. The abstract shapes that adorn each flavor variant are fun without being too youthful. Each offering has a distinct color palette and feel, while still connected to the overall brand identity. The colors are rich, attention-grabbing, and bright enough to appeal to every type of consumer.”

Ministry of Scent

“No, the Ministry of Scent isn’t some defunct wing of the Ministry of Magic from the realm of Harry Potter. Instead, they delve into the dark arts of indie perfume, and lucky for them, they got a design assist from none other than branding and packaging studio Stranger & Stranger.

“Which, come to think of it, we did a double-take on as well, as the alcoholic drinks specialists have not only turned in their first cannabis project, but now their first perfume. 2020 is crazy, y’all.”
