When Viking began publishing mystery maestro Rex Stout (1896–1975) and his Nero Wolfe series in the early 1950s, they selected Bill English to design the jackets. Not much has been written about English, but one of his better-known jackets was used for the original On The Road by Jack Kerouac. He also designed a Rand-inspired cover for Somerset Maugham’s Encore. The concept-driven jackets here echo modernist techniques of the time: photomontage, limited color and sans-serif type. They are also noteworthy for filling both the front and back of the jacket area.
