For those looking for the perfect wall hanging to accompany moderne furniture in a 1930s home or apartment, the masterpieces were to be found in Paris. These enviable settings in a classic art deco manner come from the Essex catalog (1934–35) printed by Dehon & Cie. They were printed in full color with a fifth silver ink to sharpen the highlights.

Who wouldn’t want a cocktail and cigarette in an atmosphere as chic as this?

My grandparents, that’s who. For some reason this is close to what they had in their Grand Concourse Bronx apartment, which I recall in the vaguest of remembrances. As soon as the mid-50s came, it was ripped off the wall, moldings and all, and painted white. So much for fashion, eh?
