David Wilkerson (b.1931) is a Christian evangelist, author in 1963 of The Cross and the Switchblade and founder of Times Square Church in New York, a non-denominational mission. His book was turned into a film and comic book published by Spire Christian Comics and adapted and illustrated by “Archie” artist, Al Hartley. It is based on the true story of a preacher who ventures into “sin-soaked” neighborhoods spreading God’s word to gang members. Wilkerson has made it his mission to clean up the urban streets.

Using the comic book form to convey missionary messages of all kinds has been a large part of the history of the medium. These kinds of religious comics are but one genre of the cautionary kind.
