Trick Drawing with a Few Shapes and Lines
The “trick drawings” in this booklet are examples of what a cartoonist engaged in the once-popular art of “chalk talking” can do with just a few crude lines and shapes. “It is not necessary that you already be a first class artist to master chalk talking,” says the right honorable John G. Balda, whose motto “When a Chalk Talker Draws He Draws a Crowd.” These hints were compiled to help the amateur practice and practice until perfection is the result. “Rehearse the drawings over and over again,” he says. “Start with the upper or first drawing, then finish by adding the lines as shown in the bottom drawing.” This, he asserted will train the eye, increase the speed of the hand, and improve the result.
