Search for Raytheon’s 1930s Microtherm Heat Director, used by physicians to apply intense heat to patient’s aching tissues, and about a dozen sites emerge for heat-centric products, like clothing and heat guns, using the same name. But there is no actual Microtherm still on the market. People of a certain age (i.e 80s and 90s) might remember the sophisticated microwave gadget in the general practitioner’s office, one of many new fangled contraptions that “progressive” MDs jumped on quickly. But otherwise it is a thing of the past, a contraption designed for its modern contraption-ness and promoted as the most advanced tool for contemporary health care. Sadly, it was not always successfully administered, but the operator’s guide has its charms.
