Labels for so many products are the first line of attack on the consumer. Some labels are beautiful, others are mundane—but when seen together, those designed during the early 20th century reveal an interesting consistency. These particular labels are for soft drinks. Coca Cola was already a commercial force, but scores, if not hundreds, of regional drinks were either prosperous in their states or nationally on the way up. Only one of those shown here employed a trade character, and only three represent true brand, rather than generic, names. Otherwise, the labels follow the mannerisms of the day. Here are a few of many labels produced from the early to mid 20th century.
