In the 1950s, when the Soviets were our mortal Cold War enemies, to ease the tension within the United States and promote the propaganda against the wicked Reds, various comedic attacks were launched. Among them was “We Were Spies Behind the Iron Curtain” by Constance Bannister. Ms. Bannister who died in 2005 at 92, photographed over 100,000 babies for comic relief on calendars, ads and this book, which she published through the American Binder Company in 1953. Ms. Bannister’s Babies appeared on countless magazine covers. And shes is said to have photographed many later to be famous personalities, including Christopher Walken.

Many of her books and images can be found here.
