You’ve heard the prediction that “print is dead” for too many decades. Although the reality of demise has to do with certain real economic and technological issues, futurists have enjoyed the role of doomsayer, proclaiming “the end of the design profession.” Like “the end of history,” it’s just a lot of seasoned mumbo jumbo. These days, AI is being discussed as the latest murderer of it all.

I admit I am nervous about AI but I don’t foresee a surfeit of doom and gloom. In this spirit, below is offer a case in point—an article I wrote on graphic design’s coup de grace that ran over a decade ago. I ask you: is it relevant today?
