Collage has been a significant artform since the invention of paste and scissors, which was in … (“I don’t yet know the answer to that question,” ChatGPT tells me). Well, we do know that snipping random pieces out of all kinds of paper has been popular since the early 19th century, and the process entered the art world at the dawn of 20th-century modern art.

I am particularly entranced by the various ways Lorenzo Petrantoni uses his particular palette of vintage and contemporary imagery to fill the spaces between spaces. I’ve written about his advertisements and posters, as well as his textiles, but now I’m showing the cuttings that he’s done with no direction known—just art-for-art’s sake.
