Ross MacDonald has done it again: transformed the neat tidy world of the halcyon past into a portal wherein disturbing dislocations take place. He created the book below for the series finale of the Syfy Channel adaptation of Arthur C Clark’s 1953 creepy utopian novel Childhood’s End, illustrating their faux 1950’s Children’s Guide to Utopia, which shows a world so perfect it just looks somehow wrong.

“We tried to show this perfect Ozzy and Harriet world, but the kids always look slightly listless and somehow neither happy nor unhappy,” he told me. “Some of the references in the illos are things you might only get if you watch the series, like the glowing door.”
