Some of you may recall when the NYC subway (like the Paris subway today) had a fine array of vending machines offering gum, soda and snacks. Vandals took the handles and put an end to joie d’vend — at least in the subway. It’s ironic in place of the treat machines, the NY and many other subway systems employ high tech ticket dispensing machines. And the vandals are no more.
What appeared to separate the ’40s from the ’50s was, in fact, the plethora of vending choices offered to the public. Below is a selection of options from simple gum to three course hot meals.
