There are not many copies of the newly printed facsimile edition of Fortunato Depero’s “Bolted Book” left for sale. But “act now” and you may be lucky.
The 2017 facsimile, printed last month at Graphicom in Vicenza, Italy, following a successful Kickstarter campaign, is the first to include the exact content of the 1927 original. This edition is published by Designers & Books, in collaboration with the Center for Italian Modern Art in New York and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, Italy, which holds the Depero Archive.
The book is a typographically orgasmic delight of surprising and dynamic ideas in type composition, layout, manifesto declarations, and unprecedented (for its time) ideas about books as grand objects of function and delight. As with the original, the bolts that bind this edition can be removed, allowing it to be disassembled and the pages to be displayed as individual prints.
Included is a uniquely informative reader’s guide, with an essay by me, and a page-by-page tour of the original volume.
“A small number of copies from the first print run are available at www.boltedbook.com,” says Steve Kroeter, editor of Designers & Books. “Copies of the book will be sent out to Kickstarter campaign backers in July—and other purchasers following that.” What a treat to have this document available for type enthusiasts and design mavens.
