The United States has a lot of balls. NO! Not the you-know-what kind. Our nation is often defined by our sporting events, and while some require pucks, skis, bows and arrows and fisticuffs, there are many played with balls. On June 14 the U.S. Postal Service will release a new set of stamps “with the look—and feel—of actual balls used in eight popular sports,” the USPS stated in a recent announcement.
The “Have a Ball!” Forever stamps depict balls used in baseball, basketball, football, golf, kickball, soccer, tennis and volleyball.
Each stamp is specially coated to mimic the texture of a baseball’s stitching, a golf ball’s dimples, a tennis ball’s seams, a soccer ball or volleyball’s textured panels, and the raised patterns of a football, basketball and kickball. How cool is that?
The first-day-of-issuance ceremony will be held at 8 a.m. on June 14 at the 117th U.S. Open Championship in Hartford, WI.
The stamps were designed by Daniel Nyari of Long Island City, NY, and Mike Ryan of Charlottesville, VA, under the auspices of art director Greg Breeding of Charlottesville, VA.
The new collection will be issued in panes of 16 that include two stamps of each design. While most traditional stamps are square or rectangular in design, these stamps will be round.
