Weekend Heller: Last Day Of A [Fill in Blank] Year

2016 is almost over. I am reminded of what H.L. Mencken wrote for the Baltimore Evening Sun on July 26 1920, and reprinted in the book On Politics: A Carnival of Buncombe.

Mencken cynically opined on the difficulties of good men reaching national office…

“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”
