Maira Kalman never rests, especially when it comes to preserving and celebrating our democracy. So, next Saturday, December 1, from 3-6 pm, the Julie Saul Gallery will host the signing of a new book Bold & Brave: Ten Heroes Who Won Women the Right to Vote (Alfred A. Knopf) text by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and gouache paintings from the book by Ms. Kalman.
Senator Gillibrand tells the story of how women won the right to vote from a personal and historic perspective and Kalman responds visually with portraits of the women and real and imagined scenes from the struggle to achieve the women’s vote. The heroic figures include Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, Alice Paul, Inez Milholland, Ida B. Wells, Mary Church Terrell, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Jovita Idar, and Lucy Burns.

Kalman will be at the gallery to sign copies of the Bold & Brave, as well as another recent publication written in collaboration with her son Alex Kalman of Sara Berman’s Closet, based on the exhibition held in 2017/18 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Julie Saul Gallery, 535 West 22nd Street, 6th floor, Saturday, December 1, 3-6 pm.
