So, today is when I select, in this case, three of my favorite things this and next week. You follow? All are more or less self-serving albeit promoting classes, events and campaigns that revolve around others. With that throat-clearing caveat, let’s begin:

Seymour Chwast’s War Against War.

Seymour Chwast and Deborah Sussman in ADC/Collins Mini Doc. A long-awaited pair of short portraits of two Hall of Fame members was released this past Tuesday. Produced by Brian Collins / Collins: and directed by Nicolas Heller and Nic Ace, they reveal the birth pangs of these two design masters. Sadly, Sussman passed away before the video was complete, but happily for us it shows her with all her passions intact. Chwast admits he has to work every day, and if you want to hear more about this claim visit the Strand’s 20/80 and At War With War.

SVA’s Summer Type as Language Workshop. This summer intensive offers a four-week immersive experience in type design. Program coordinator Angela Riechers has mixed theoretical underpinning and practical experience for designers at all career levels working in both print and digital environments, with special consideration given to typography’s role as a narrative tool. Lettering and typeface design will be explored within their larger social and cultural context as well as in terms of typographic theory and usage, aesthetics and technology. Over the course of the program, students will design a typeface (either from scratch or by adapting a historical face) and use it in a project of their choosing in any media. See you there, I hope.
