There was a brief moment in the early history of Rolling Stone when it served up a balanced diet of cultural and political views (and the Eagles were popular, too). It was a time during the ’60s and early ’70s when radical and alternative anti-establishment politics were fashionable. Since the Stone was always tied to fashion in one way or another, it was appropriate for Ralph Steadman to caricature the anti-Vietnam War candidate Senator George McGovern’s race against Richard M. Nixon for the White House.
This August 1972 cover with a story about the contentious Miami Democratic convention, which nominated McGovern and Senator Thomas Eagleton, brings back vivid memories of a time when government may have had misguided policies, but it wasn’t grossly malfunctioning as it is today.
