Here’s a great in-depth post at the Font Feed about young type designer Yanone’s efforts to develop a truly Arabic identity for the city of Amman. It’s a lovely series of typefaces envisioned as a humanist serif, sans, and Arabic script, all with matching true italics (italics being relatively neglected in Arabic typesetting). The post details the background of the project, the sketches for the typography, a few of the resulting graphics (alongside plenty of the gorgeous type forms), and includes a twenty-minute film about the project.
