Do You Speak Logo?

How important is a logo? Does it influence the brand? As a designer, I don’t need to tell you the importance of a good logo, or how it impacts the brand it represents. I did a blog post some weeks back on Print about the change in IKEA’s logo after 60 years.

“I thought that something had gone terribly wrong, but when I Twittered about it, people at their ad agency told me that this was actually the new Ikea font,” Mattias Aker

berg told Time magazine. “I could hardly believe it was true.”A petition was quickly started with thousands signing on to protest the change. Not only is a logo influential, loyal customers may take offense to any redesign.

McDonald’s didn’t add the arches until at least three decades into the business. The 1948 logo has an almost art deco feel. The golden arches or “Ms” are now securely embedded into the company’s tradition and provide a sense of familiarity to a now overpopulated burger market.
