Love for a Mother

For food photographer Dick Patrick, this was not just a passion project or a self-promotion tool. It was personal in the deepest sense of the word. Patsy is an 80-page, case-bound photo journal that pays homage to his mother’s cooking by telling her story through her recipes, photographed by Dick, as well as other details from her life.

“When Dick told us his mother’s story and showed us the photos, we knew we wanted to make this a special piece for him,” say The Matchbox Studio’s Liz Burnett and Ryan Raschbaum. Dick’s friendship with The Matchbox Studio goes way back, as they’ve known one another for more than 20 years and have teamed up together for a variety of projects, but they knew this one was close to his heart. “Everything from paper, typography selections, colors, etc. was chosen to convey pieces of her personality.”

Comfort Foods Invite You In

Southern charm oozes from each page of the book, featuring lush paper that begs to be touched and gorgeous food photography interspersed with delicate yet compelling illustrations. Featured recipes include ones like Banana Pudding with a Meringue topping and fried chicken, photographed in a way that makes you feel like you have an intimidate window into Patsy’s life. #gallery-3 { margin: auto; } #gallery-3 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-3 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-3 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

All of it was done to honor Patsy and her personality. “Patsy is one classy Southern lady with a great sense of humor, so there are details throughout that hit traditional and more lighthearted notes,” Liz and Ryan say. Judge Chad Michael notes that this beautifully executed book displays equal part detail and restraint with the Southern charm coming through in every aspect. #gallery-4 { margin: auto; } #gallery-4 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-4 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-4 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

“The cookbook style approach, quilt and porcelain tile patterns, and even the logotype selection that gives the feeling of fabric weaving or an antique loom. It’s smart, tactile, and damn-right proper,” Chad says.

We couldn’t agree more.
