The Daily Drop Cap is a nice little idea: a combination of gallery and resource, created by typographer and illustrator Jessica Hische. Every day she creates a new illustrated drop cap and generates code for publishers to use it (under an Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works license, which is a smart way to get her work and name out there). Her work veers towards pop, so some of her forms seem a bit kitsch to me. But frankly, I don’t think the quality of every single piece is the right thing to observe—it’s the quality of the overall collection. Daily publishing is really taxing; that she’s able to pull this off every day is laudable.
We make words is a similar exercise, but with illustrated words rendered photographically. This is a gallery by two artists, and the works are not free for re-use, so ask if you want to do that.
