December 10, 2008. At the Miami Convention Center last week, home to Art Basel proper, here’s what $100,000 could have net you: three Karl Lagerfeld photographs of the artist Jeff Koons at Versailles; 3,333 eggplant-and-onion entrees (for sale at $30 a pop in the swanky Art Collectors’ lounge); or Bouquet de Champagne de Dom Ruinart, a large-scale centerpiece by Dutch designer Maarten Baas that was both more pretty and less French than it sounds. Two years in the making, the theatrical centerpiece, constructed from clear Murano glass and silver, is Baas’s Dalí-esque take on corporate collaboration, in which a Venetian chandlier, goblets, and bottles of the French bubbly appear to be melting into puddles on the table. Watch the video below for Baas’s explanation of the project.
