Facebook has quietly unveiled one of the largest recommendation engines on the web. (This happened on July 2nd, while most Americans were preparing to grill, blow up or set afire anything they could find over the following weekend.) It’s is a pretty clear volley on Facebook’s part aimed straight at Google’s front door. This essentially indicates that search may be a great way to find information, but having your social circle recommend it is just as much (if not more of) a contender.
I hate to say it, but it’s pretty much the first useful application I’ve seen of Facebook. I don’t necessarily feel the need to keep up with every person I’ve known since kindergarten, but I am certainly more ready to take their advice over some stranger on a Google-indexed reviewer’s site.
