First, Matthew Butterick designed type for Font Bureau. Then he started a web development agency. Now, he’s a lawyer, and he’s recently pushed out a website for his book, Typography for Lawyers.

Having recently completed work for a lawyer, I’m pleased to see a resource like this available to educate the law community about document creation. I was often surprised at the primitiveness of typography and typesetting rules for court documents, simply “because it’s always been done,” and a stubbornness to change to avoid a risk of ire from other lawyers and offices. This insider’s site and forthcoming book should help make things a little less stodgy, with a well-rounded introduction to typography and clear recommendations for small changes that make a big difference.
