We’re currently celebrating our fourth win in the General Excellence category of the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) Ellie Awards, the magazine industry’s highest honor. It was our 10th nomination for General Excellence, and our fourth win. ASME honored the magazine with the award in 2005, 2002, and 1994, and nominated PRINT twice for a single-topic issue.
“PRINT is thrilled to be recognized by our peers with this award,” says Joyce Rutter Kaye, editor-in-chief (pictured above, with outgoing ASME president Cindy Leive). “In 2007, we were able to produce some wonderfully strong issues—including our New Visual Artists issue, the Consumption Issue, and the Business Graphics Annual—and this is thanks to the hard work of a truly collaborative, innovative, and engaged group of editors, art directors, and contributors. I am so proud to have PRINT represent our parent company, F+W Publications, with the industry honor. Perhaps most important, this is a further, and most welcome, acknowledgement of the importance of design journalism itself.”
And ASME had this to say: “Proving that just looking great isn’t enough, PRINT stands out in a cluttered field with its expansive view of its subject, its relentless curiosity, and its determination to look at design not in a vacuum but as a crucial gateway to popular culture, the environment, even politics.”
We’d also like to congratulate our fellow nominees (and visual culture magazines) Metropolis and Aperture, as well as Virginia Quarterly Review (which picked up an Ellie for its issue on South America) and Georgia Review. As our managing editor Emily Gordon told FishbowlNY, she was happy to hear the presenter announce, “The winner is PRINT,” because the night was really a celebration of print in general. We would also like to send a shout-out to Scott Dadich, one of our 2005 New Visual Artists, who won an Ellie for Wired’s design. Congrats Scott!
According to the ASME, the 2008 Ellies represent a record-setting 1,964 entries from 333 print and online magazines. This General Excellence category recognizes overall excellence in magazines in six circulation categories. It honors the effectiveness with which writing, reporting, editing, and design all come together to command readers’ attention and fulfill the magazine’s unique editorial mission.
