I was happy to see Rick Valicenti’s recent journal/print project (shown here and above and below), which he titles “Notes To Self.” In 2008, he made more than 575 dense, black sumi ink pieces on 22″ x 30″ Rives BFK as something of a therapeutic tool. This week, he is showcasing them in South Africa at the world’s largest design conference, Design Indaba.

I have been collecting various designers’ sketchbook pages for a few years. Seeing the process and unedited musings is like spending time inside a designer’s head. Okay, that might not always be so pleasurable, depending on the head, but sometimes it’s a true joy. Do any of you keep sketchbooks or journals? If so, why?
