King Bonk seating by Fredrikson Stallard at David Gill
September 8, 2008. London Design Festival Preview: From September 15 through October 19 at the David Gill Gallery on Loughborough Street, Patrik Fredrikson and Ian Stallard will show off their latest quirkily titled design, the limited-edition King Bonk fiberglass chair and footstool. The seating’s sculptural form and glossy finish are reminiscent of experiments by American Wendell Castle, but were achieved by trussing up chunks of foam with string, then carving it with a chainsaw, leaving it untouched by computer.
Additional pieces by Fredrikson Stallard will be on show at David Gill’s Fulham Road space, as well as on the Victoria Embankment of The Thames, on the Somerset House’s River Terrace at the corner of Waterloo Bridge. This is where the designers’ new work, Portrait, will be installed on commission by Veuve Clicquot. Portrait is a single piece of wood grain that has been blown up and transformed using a combination of steel and light to recreate the structure of wood. (It will be open to the public from 8AM – 11PM daily from September 13 through October 13.)
